AU | Previous Game Backstory:
Canon: The story of Vassalord takes place on Earth, predominantly during modern times. Vampires are mythological and thought to be nothing more than movie fodder for Hollywood. However, there are, actually, a number of vampires all over the world that survive by keeping a low profile. One such vampire is Johnny Rayflo. Johnny was born a human during the medieval era and with a different name (which is not given in canon). He grew up in the capitol of one of the kingdoms of his time and was a very aloof child. When he was of age, Johnny trained to become a knight and ended up being one of the best in the realm; he was so skilled that he became the personal bodyguard of the princess, Marie. Marie adored Johnny and, in turn, Johnny dedicated himself to the little girl and made her safety his priority, forsaking all else in his life.
Unbeknownst to Johnny, a very powerful demon named Belial took notice of him for his skills and devastating good looks. Belial kept himself hidden from Johnny, though, choosing to watch him from afar rather than interfere. That changed when the castle was overrun by the enemy and Johnny was fatally wounded trying to defend the castle. Belial revealed himself, telling Johnny he had been watching him and had fallen in love with him. Johnny was given the option of dying as a human or living on as something much more powerful. In exchange for heaven, death, and his name, Johnny received Belial’s power by becoming a ‘pure’ vampire, binding himself to the demon.
In Vassalord, a pure vampire is a rare breed that is created by something else, such as a demon, and is a vampire who has been nothing but a vampire their entire lives. Belial essentially erased the fact that Johnny had ever been human. A pure vampire can go longer without proper sustenance and can create other vampires by giving them their blood. Pure vampires also have a way of cheating death-by-sunlight. Though they dissolve into sand as other vampires would, there is a bat left within the remains that, if taken to the vampire’s coffin and left there for seven days, will regenerate back into the vampire, good as new.
After Johnny received his new status, Belial left him since the demon couldn’t stay with him all the time. This left Johnny to see who else might be alive in the keep. Much to his delight, he found his princess, Marie, still alive thanks to having been hidden by a maid. Driven by love and loyalty for the girl, Johnny gave her some of his blood and turned her into a vampire. He continued to serve her like that for a while, but the blood and power drove Marie insane. Often, she would go out and slaughter whole towns and villages in an attempt to satisfy her hunger, earning her the nickname ‘Elagabalus’ in legends which Johnny took on, since no one knew what the responsible creature looked like, so that she could avoid the blame. Seeing how completely out of control she was but lacking the heart to kill her, Johnny knocked her unconscious and gave her to the keeping of the Catholic Church to keep in a sleeping state for all eternity.
Heartbroken, Johnny was alone again, but eventually he was found by ‘Barry’, a succubus that Belial created in his image and with his powers so that, by proxy, he could be with Johnny forever. However, the succubus was still a demon and had all the memories and emotions of Belial, so Barry became obsessed with Johnny. Johnny’s relationship with Barry was very abusive and torturous physically, mentally, and emotionally. Barry found pleasure in chasing, dismembering, and raping Johnny, sometimes even physically eating the vampire’s flesh for his ‘meal.’ Barry often called Johnny ‘Addie’, -alluding to ‘Adam’ of the biblical ‘Adam and Eve-’, since Barry saw himself as a god of demons and had created Johnny as God would have created Adam. The demon even went so far as to take one of Johnny’s ribs and make a female vampire out of it, Rayfell, to represent ‘Eve’. The three were together for several centuries, and the abuse never changed. Barry never saw it as abuse, Rayfell partly enjoyed it and never thought she deserved any better, and Johnny had nowhere else to go. Barry often enjoyed playing mind games with his ‘creations’ by making them act out ‘Adam and Eve’, which entailed tricking Rayfell into giving in to her ‘Eve-like temptations’ that Johnny would then be ashamed of because he thought better of her than that.
Finally, the two came together against Barry and ran away from him. By leaving no trail and going their separate ways, the two were able to live their own lives, although this didn’t stop Barry from trying to hunt them down. By this time, there was a war amongst humans going on, and it was from the dead bodies of this war that Johnny started getting his blood instead of from live victims. After one of these battles, a small boy found Johnny drinking from the corpses but showed no fear of him. Even when Johnny threatened to eat him, the boy’s only response was his stomach growling. This amused Johnny, and he gave the kid bread and took him to his ‘home.’
The boy, who Johnny named ‘Chris,’ easily worked his way past Johnny’s then-cold exterior and into his heart, bringing out a caring, loving side that hadn’t been exposed since Marie. One night, Chris told him he loved ‘Master,’ the name he gave to Johnny, and said he wanted to stay with the vampire forever. Feeling remorse for how thin and cold the child was and not wanting the human to grow more attached than he already was, Johnny delivered him to a church that could take care of Chris properly and vanished. As much as he loved the child, he knew that sleeping during the day, going out at night, living underground, and eating only the scraps of food that Johnny could find was not a healthy life for a human boy.
Johnny went back into hiding, although he started to deal in the more shady side of business to earn money, and he began drinking from blood packs since the war had ended and blood was not as easy to come by. Johnny’s dealings brought him close to the upper-class and earned him quite the fortune, resulting in a lot of wining and dining with high-profile humans. Luckily, a vampire’s body processes food normally minus the energy it gives humans, so Johnny was able to keep up the façade for a long time. However, Barry was still alive, still obsessed, and still hunting Rayflo. Every now and then, Barry would catch up to Johnny and continue his abusive treatment until Johnny escaped again. This ‘Cat and Mouse’ game caused Johnny to take up several different names wherever he went.
Years later, when the boy, Chris, had become a man, Johnny reappeared in his life as a priest, though Chris now went by Charley. The two became a team without Charley knowing Johnny’s identity as the vampire he’d met years ago, and they traveled together for a little while, hunting and killing rouge vampires. On one of these missions, Chris was mortally wounded during a fight. Johnny was there with him and Charley told him he wanted to stay by Johnny’s side forever. Not wanting the boy he loved to die, Johnny turned him into a vampire by giving Charley his blood and revealing the fact that Johnny was not only a vampire, but the same man who had helped Chris in his childhood.
Charley was angry about what he had become and felt betrayed by Johnny. He even tried, multiple times, to kill Johnny, but he was never able to go through with it since he did love the man in his own way. During this time, Johnny attempted to run from Charley mostly out of remorse for what he had done to Chis. Johnny went back to his playboy persona, marketing himself as a vampire to draw willing blood donators and calling himself ‘Pigeon’ to throw off Barry. It worked for a while; Johnny played cat and mouse with both Barry and Charley until Charley stopped trying to kill Johnny. Although, even when he finally came to terms with what he was, Charley would often be teased by Johnny such as the new nickname he received, ‘Cherry,’ in reference to Charley’s virginal status.
Soon, however, Charley began converting parts of his body into machinery, making himself into a Cyborg so that he could continue to do ‘God’s work.’ A vampire, pure or otherwise, can’t sing or hear hymns or recite from the Bible or else they will begin bleeding internally, as if stabbed. Similarly, holy objects (that are often made of silver) burn vampire skin like holy water does. Because of this, Charley converted his ears, vocal chords, hands, and other various bits into cybernetics. This change hurt Johnny and only served to remind him of what he had done to Charley.
Johnny and Charley began living together in Los Angeles and often took up jobs for the Vatican that involved slaying vampires. Johnny often stayed behind while Charley worked for the Vatican, although Charley still had to come home often since he had taken up feeding from Johnny only. This not only gave Charley extra strength, as a vampire’s blood has more energy in it, but it also kept him clean and ‘pure’ in God’s eyes since he didn’t drink human blood. Johnny had no alternative and continued his diet of blood packs. However, what he didn’t tell Charley was that these blood packs would only keep him energized for two weeks at most, a shorter amount of time than a normal diet of human blood would. Since Johnny’s a pure vampire, it was essentially like a human eating only vegetables with no other vitamins or nutrients. Johnny was steadily getting weaker from his long-term diet of ‘stale’ blood.
Over the time they spent together, it became obvious that they held feelings for each other, but Charley’s stubborn denial and Johnny’s flirtatious and non-committal ways kept them from seeing or admitting what was obvious to their friends. Every now and then the connection would show when one or the other got hurt during a mission, but often times Johnny himself would sabotage the moment by teasing Charley to get a rise out of him or by distancing himself mentally.
While carrying out these missions and spending time with Charley, Johnny largely ignored Barry, hoping to avoid the demon as long as possible. For a long time he was successful and even kept the existence of Barry a secret from Charley. However, Barry eventually caught up to Johnny when he killed a vampire out of jealousy because Johnny had let her drink from him. Knowing Barry was volatile and dangerous; Johnny began to distance himself from everyone around him, especially Charley, and even left the place they had been living together to protect him. He moved back into one of their apartments, but Barry found him and deceived Johnny into letting the demon in by pretending to be Charley. Once he had Johnny alone, Barry wasted no time in returning to his old treatment, torturing, raping, and devouring a good portion of Johnny’s body. After he’d ‘had his fill’, he left Johnny in the apartment for Charley to find later, leaving a tiny, toy-like, creature there to spy on the two via magic similar to a looking glass.
Johnny, knowing the spy was there, pushed Charley away even more (including physically), even as the other man tried to help him heal emotionally and physically. Confused and hurt, Charley continued to work for the Vatican in an attempt to discover what a company called ‘Vassalord’ had to do with people turning into vampires. In an attempt to distract a jealous Barry, who now knew who Charley was, Johnny lured Barry away into another game of Cat and Mouse. This didn’t stop Johnny from coming to help Charley when he really needed it, including all the way in Italy when Charley needed to escape a tough situation regarding one of his missions, but Johnny still wouldn’t offer any answers to Charley’s questions about what was happening. As soon as Johnny felt Charley was safe again, he would disappear and go back to luring Barry away. Although he had help from Rayfell in one instance where she killed Berry to allow Johnny to escape, Johnny was left to his own devices to avoid Barry while still trying to keep an eye on Charley.
Johnny felt he had gained enough of a lead on Barry to afford seeing Charley and let him feed on Johnny’s blood. He invited Charley to the opera so they could meet in Johnny’s private box but, just before Charley arrived, Johnny noticed too late that Barry was sitting in the box across the theatre from him and he couldn’t send Charley away. Charley tried to convince Johnny to let him help, but Johnny pushed him away. While Charley was leaving the opera house in search of Johnny, Barry confronted him, Johnny showed up to help him, and the three engaged in a fight that resulted in Barry’s powers being stripped and Johnny dying.
Vatheon: Due to the general acceptance by almost everyone he met about who and what he was, Johnny has developed a more trusting side that he extends to almost everyone he meets. He’s more open about himself as long as it doesn’t delve into too many of the more painful things in his past, and he goes out of his way to meet new people and learn about them. He’s developed a love for learning about the other cultures that he comes across and has opened up to sharing about vampires from his world and his feelings on being one. While he will still call himself a monster and a ‘thing’ before he refers to himself as a person (self-deprecation is forever his friend) he’s more open to the thought that he isn’t just a monster and desperately seeks some form of salvation, forgiveness, and acceptance even if it’s not from God, though he doesn’t, fully, believe he deserves it just yet.
This new-found trust and general love for all the different species he’s met has made him less closed off about who he is. Before, he held the belief that a good vampire was the one unnoticed and ‘lost in the crowd.’ Now he’s more than willing to tell people what he is, especially if he intends to meet with them, thinking they ought to know before they get too involved with him. That said, he still relies, heavily, on his ‘masks’ and his ability to smile away almost everything, keeping his true emotions, largely, to himself. He holds close to the thought that people would rather see a smile over a frown and uses this as early and often as he can, only showing his true feelings around people he trusts implicitly ( a Longer list than in canon but not by much).
Before, Johnny would lie at the drop of a hat with the simplest subjects, now he finds it harder to do as someone he puts a great deal of trust in prompted him to tell the truth more often. He’s become a social butterfly and he’s learned all sorts of things from his time with others including how to bake and a bit about how to cook. He still has some of his knightly tendencies in that he’ll protect someone at a moment’s notice, but now he extends that to total strangers believing everyone he meets is worth protecting.

Canon Standing: Post ‘death’ in Chapter 18
Personality:
Johnny’s personality is a giant mixture of badass, childlike, and distant; if there’s one thing Johnny’s good at doing it’s making himself seem open and friendly without giving anything away that he doesn’t want to. He has lived a long and hard life, so he has a serious side that tends to come out when he is on a job or dealing with something especially painful. He still wears a smile even then, it just has a sadder edge to it. Often times, his solution to painful things or dealing with issues is to hide away from those he cares about or smile so they don’t worry, though this rarely works on Charley and those who are used to his ‘masks.’ For Johnny, his smile comes in three forms: ‘don’t look any closer, I’m fine’ (his smile to hide his true emotions), his ‘I’m actually enjoying myself’ smile (that he uses while teasing or being playful), and his ‘truly happy’ smile (which is smaller, subtler, and more rare).
However, as painful as his past has been, Johnny still manages to keep his sense of humor, often times teasing Charley with sexual innuendos and making jokes about serious things to lighten the mood. He has a very childlike and innocent attitude when presented with new (and especially cute) things, fawning over them and getting excited about everything. Often times when he is just meeting people, he'll act 'knightly' or even somewhat formal, but as he gets closer to people, he'll warm up to them and tease them and be a lot more touchy-feely with them. This teasing, although mainly just for fun and to keep things light, is also a method to keep people at arm’s length; Johnny figures if he can keep people from getting close, they cannot hurt him and he cannot hurt them.
Although he is supposed to be a blood-thirsty killer according to the few files on him kept by the Vatican, Johnny is actually a man with a big heart who regrets losing his humanity and tries to make up for it in any way he can. This regret is largely what inspires him to help Charley on his missions, other than wanting to protect Charley. This is also why he never drinks living human blood, instead drinking from blood packs or corpses. The two times he's turned his loved ones into vampires have both ended badly for him, so he's weary of doing it again and doesn't believe being a vampire is a 'gift' that should be celebrated. That said, if given the chance to be human again, Johnny would have a hard time accepting it because he recognizes the strength and power he now has can be used to protect the people who matter.
This regret for his decision plus his heavily religious background has resulted in a good layer of self-hatred that he keeps hidden from all eyes, though it shows up on occasion when he makes self-disparaging remarks. Although these remarks are often said in a joking way, he rarely is ever truly joking about them. It’s also fair to say this self-hatred is part of why Johnny is reckless with his own life. He doesn't believe he has a right to live considering his vary nature and all of the things he has done, however, he won't outright kill himself because, what slim hope he has that heaven will accept him, will be gone if he takes his own life. However, dangerous situations are possible ‘outs’ so he greets them with a smirk and a smart-remark.
His kindness shows in other ways, too. As Charley notes during one of their conversations and as can be seen in one of the flashbacks, Johnny has always been particularly kind to children and those he finds childlike. He also has a soft spot for women in danger, most likely a lingering feeling from being a knight of his realm. He'll often do things for others if he feels it'll help them or make them happy, even if it might hurt him; he sees other people's happiness far more important than his own.
Though he is physically disgusted at the thought of sleeping with women, he never says anything about it, and even continues to be polite (politeness that is easily confused for flirting) when women make advances on him. This ‘flirtatious politeness’ is not limited to women. Although he truly believes he is only being polite when he ‘sweet talks’ women, he is often being serious when he does it with the men. And, due to his background, he has nothing against casual sex with anyone who is willing, in fact, he finds enjoyment in it.
While he’d much rather spend time having fun or relaxing, when the time calls for it, Johnny will not hesitate to attack or kill anyone who presents a danger to those around him. It could be said that he ‘slips into defender mode’ when others are in trouble, and he has no problem being cold and aloof in these instances. If someone threatens a person Johnny cares about, he’ll kill them as soon as he looks at them. However, this violent, vengeful side is reserved for those he cares about only. When it comes to personal grievances, Johnny is very laid back, almost like he is accepting them as a sort of penance for choosing to become a vampire. This is especially evident when he is dealing with Barry. While it’s true he fears and runs from Barry, he never rebukes him or shows any anger towards him for what he does to Johnny. That is not to say he doesn’t feel anger or hatred for those like Barry, it does come out on occasion in glares he gives or cold, cutting, remarks he makes; even so, just like all of his intense emotions, he would rather hide most of it.

Canon Powers:
Strengths:
Immortality/Healing: With the three exceptions listed further on, Johnny is immortal and incredably hard to kill. He can heal himself from just about any injury including regenerating lost limbs and organs. Johnny can also heal others through a healing enzyme in his saliva (so, yes, he has to lick people for it to work); it's especially useful for small wounds, though larger/deeper wounds can also be healed, it just takes more licks/time. | Mind – His healing would be slower than normal
His blood- When Johnny spills some of his blood he can create two demon girls, who look like human maids except for the weapons attached to their hands,, named ‘Yuria’ and ‘Makiria,’ to protect him. | Dark, Physical
Smells/strength/speed/hearing- All of Johnny’s senses and reflexes are intensified due to being a vampire. | Physical
Flight- Johnny can turn into a swarm of individual bats and fly where he needs to that way. | Air, Physical
Weaknesses
Blood- Johnny is a vampire, and although it would be easy for him to gain blood like any normal vampire, he refuses to drink from humans, so he needs blood packs instead. Since this is ‘non-living blood’, it returns most, but not all of his full strength. While he doesn’t need to drink blood constantly, he can only go 2-3 weeks without blood before the urge to drink becomes too much to handle. | Physical
Entering- Since Johnny is a vampire, he cannot enter another person’s home without first being invited. This is not the case with public buildings or abandoned places, though. | Mind
Three ways to die permanently- Johnny can only be killed if he is stabbed through the heart (material of the weapon doesn’t matter), if he gets his head cut off, or if he is hurt by holy objects (e.g., reciting from the Bible would kill him, though, crosses don’t have any affect). | Physical
Garlic- While it doesn’t kill him, it does repulse him and could make him sick if he is exposed to it, sort of like a really bad allergy. | Physical
Sun exposure- If Johnny is exposed to the sun’s rays directly, he will turn to dust (as proper vampires are known to do). However, in the dust there will be a small and weakened bat. If this bat is taken to Johnny’s coffin and closed in there, after 7 days and nights, Johnny will be reborn, memories and everything intact and back to normal. | Physical
